נסיעה ב-FTL היא פיסת טכנולוגיה חיונית עבור הצי הקולוניאלי. הוא מאפשר לאוניות לעבור במהירות בין מערכות כוכבים, בשביל פעולות צבאיות ואזרחיות. כונן ה-FTL הוא גם גורם מפתח ביכולתו של הצי הקולוניאלי להתחמק מהסיילון.
