Announcing new Place Count functions

Announcing two new Place Count functions: PLACES_COUNT_V2 and PLACES_COUNT_PER_TYPE_V2. These new functions offer significant performance improvements and support for batch processing of geographies.

New countries available

Places Insights data is now available for 36 new countries: Argentina, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Czechia, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam.

New place types

Places Insights now supports 180 new types, which can be used to filter results.

New business status

Added the FUTURE_OPENING business status for a business that is not yet operationalized, but is coming within the next 90 days.

The PLACES_COUNT_PER_H3 function now supports H3 resolutions up to 11 (previously 8). See the documentation.

Places Count functions are now generally available. Place count functions are predefined SQL queries that allow you to get and filter place counts per geography, type, and H3. You can also retrieve Place IDs to look up individual POI information. See the documentation.

Announcing the Experimental release of Historical data for Places Insights. Historical data allows you to analyze how points of interest have changed over time.

Address fields in the dataset schema separate the id and name fields into discrete string or string array fields. See the migration guide.

The PLACES_COUNT_PER_TYPE, PLACES_COUNT_PER_GEO, and PLACES_COUNT_PER_H3 functions now support the sample_place_ids column in the response. This column, of type ARRAY<STRING>, includes up to 250 place IDs for each element in the response.

Change

For Places Count functions, reduced the minimum search area from 500 meters by 500 meters (250,000 m²) to 40.0 meters by 40.0 meters (1600 m²).

Announcing the Experimental release of Place count functions for Places Insights. Place count functions are predefined SQL queries that run in BigQuery and don't enforce a minimum count threshold. These functions are complementary to places data queries and the underlying data for both the dataset and the functions are the same.
