Camera (legacy)

All legacy Nest Cams are supported in the Smart Device Management (SDM) API:

Google Nest Cam Indoor
Google Nest Cam Outdoor
Google Nest Cam IQ Indoor
Google Nest Cam IQ Outdoor

These devices return a device type of CAMERA:

sdm.devices.types.CAMERA

The Google Nest Doorbell (legacy) and Google Nest Hub Max also function as cameras and feature similar traits, though they return device types of DOORBELL and DISPLAY, respectively.

Google Nest Cam Indoor and Google Nest Cam Outdoor can be used in either the Nest app or the Google Home app but not both at the same time. When the camera is on the Nest app it supports RTSP. And when the camera is on the Google Home app it supports WebRTC. The supportedProtocols field of the CameraLiveStream trait shows which format is supported. Handle camera events

The following events may be triggered from a CAMERA device type or a DOORBELL or DISPLAY that features a camera, such as the Google Nest Doorbell (legacy) or Google Nest Hub Max :

Download a camera image

Make a GET call to the url from a GenerateImage command response, using the token in the HTTP Authorization header with Basic authorization, to download the camera image:

Use width or height query parameters to customize the resolution of the downloaded image. Only one of these parameters need to specified. The other parameter is scaled automatically according to the camera's aspect ratio.

For example, if the camera's aspect ratio is 4:3, to download the camera image with a resolution of 480 x 360 specify either the width or the height:

Other restrictions to the download URL apply:

If both parameters are provided in the URL, width is used and height is ignored.
If neither parameter is provided in the URL, a default value of 480 is chosen for the width.

Access a live stream

The live stream from a camera can be accessed. The following stream formats are supported for this device:

RTSP
WebRTC

To access a live stream, use the appropriate GenerateFormatStream command of the CameraLiveStream trait.

WebRTC

For a WebRTC stream, send an offerSdp in the GenerateWebRtcStream command of the CameraLiveStream trait to get an answerSdp:

We recommend using the Web Application Sample to learn how to generate a successful live stream. This sample generates a valid offerSdp that meets all the SDP offer restrictions for Nest cameras.

An SDP offer for Nest cameras must meet the following restrictions:

Only the Unified format is supported. Plan B is not supported.
All media lines (m=) must be present in the offer and must be in this order:
1. audio
2. video
3. application
Trickle ICE is supported, but not required.
Only the Opus codec is supported for audio.
The audio setting must be set to a=recvonly (receive only).
The offer must end with a newline character of either \r\n or \n.

The answerSdp must be used to generate the live stream within 30 seconds of receiving the response, otherwise it expires. If it expires, execute the GenerateWebRtcStream command again to receive a new answerSdp.

When opening WebRTC channels for the live stream, make sure to create a data channel as well as a video channel.

RTSP live stream URLs cannot be shared between clients. A stream URL can only be used by one client at a time. If multiple clients want to stream from the same camera at the same time, RTSP commands must be sent for each individual client, and each individual client must use its own stream URL.

Extend a live stream

Camera live stream sessions are only valid for 5 minutes. If you need to extend the lifetime of a live stream, use the appropriate ExtendFormatStream command of the CameraLiveStream trait for the stream format you generated.

WebRTC

Wired

A WebRTC stream can only be extended on wire-powered cameras. A battery-powered camera is considered wire-powered while plugged in for charging. If the camera is on battery power, a request to extend an active WebRTC stream will be ignored.

To extend a WebRTC stream, specify the media session ID of the stream with the ExtendWebRtcStream command of the CameraLiveStream trait:

Stop a live stream

Any time you are no longer using a camera live stream, you should stop it and invalidate the stream. To do so, use the appropriate StopFormatStream command of the CameraLiveStream trait for the stream format you generated.

The following error code(s) may be returned in relation to this device:

Error Message	RPC	Troubleshooting
The camera is not available for streaming.	`FAILED_PRECONDITION`	The camera is either offline or not available for streaming due to a technical issue.
Command not supported.	`INVALID_ARGUMENT`	Used an RTSP livestream command for a camera that supports WebRTC, or used a WebRTC livestream command for a camera that supports RTSP.
Camera image is no longer available for download.	`DEADLINE_EXCEEDED`	Event images expire 30 seconds after the event is published. Make sure to download the image prior to expiration.
Event id does not belong to the camera.	`FAILED_PRECONDITION`	Use the correct `eventID` returned by the camera event.
