O LandScan de alta definição (HD) fornece estimativas de população em grade com resolução de 3 segundos de arco (~100 m). Os valores de cada célula do LandScan HD representam uma estimativa de contagem da população ambiente (ou seja, média de 24 horas). Dessa forma, os dados capturam todo o potencial de atividade das pessoas ao longo do dia e da noite, e não apenas um local residencial. O modelo LandScan HD incorpora dados atuais de uso do solo e infraestrutura de várias fontes, aplica estimativas de ocupação de instalações do projeto de tabelas de densidade populacional (PDT, na sigla em inglês) do ORNL e aproveita novos algoritmos de processamento de imagens desenvolvidos no ORNL para mapear rapidamente estruturas de edifícios e áreas de vizinhança usando ambientes de computação de alto desempenho.
