تهدف مهمة Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation GEDI إلى تحديد خصائص بنية النظم الإيكولوجية وديناميكيتها من أجل تحسين قياس دورة الكربون والتنوّع البيولوجي على الأرض وفهمها بشكل جذري. تجمع أداة GEDI، المرفقة بمحطة الفضاء الدولية (ISS)، بيانات على مستوى العالم بين خطي العرض 51.6 درجة شمالاً و51.6 درجة جنوبًا بأعلى دقة وأكثر عينات كثافة للتركيب الثلاثي الأبعاد للأرض. يتكوّن جهاز GEDI من ثلاثة أشعة ليزر تنتج إجمالي ثمانية مقاطع عرضية على الأرض، والتي تأخذ عينات على الفور من ثماني بصمات تبلغ مساحتها حوالي 25 مترًا، وتبعد كل منها عن الأخرى حوالي 60 مترًا على طول المسار.

The GEDI instrument, attached to the International Space\nStation (ISS), collects data globally between 51.6° N and 51.6° S\nlatitudes at the highest resolution and densest sampling of the\n3-dimensional structure of the Earth.
