W nocy z 1 na 2 stycznia 2024 r. na prośbę japońskich ministerstw i powiązanych organizacji JAXA przeprowadziła obserwację awaryjną za pomocą satelity ALOS-2 PALSAR-2. JAXA uważa, że te dane obserwacyjne w sytuacjach kryzysowych będą niezwykle przydatne w zarządzaniu katastrofami, dlatego zdecydowała się udostępnić je w Google Earth Engine do użytku publicznego i badawczego.
JAXA udostępniła dane obserwacyjne PALSAR-2 w trybie mapy pasmowej poziomu 2.1 z pojedynczą polaryzacją o rozdzielczości 3 m z okresu 1–3 stycznia i 8 stycznia 2024 r. oraz niektóre dane archiwalne. Dane PALSAR-2 na poziomie 2.1 są ortorektyfikowane z danych na poziomie 1.1 za pomocą cyfrowego modelu terenu. Wartości DN można przekształcić na wartości sigma naught w decybelach (dB) za pomocą tego równania:
