يتم إنشاء خريطة الغابات/المناطق غير الحرجية (FNF) العالمية من خلال تصنيف صورة SAR (معامل التشتت الخلفي) في فسيفساء PALSAR-2/PALSAR SAR العالمية بدقة 25 مترًا، وذلك لتصنيف وحدات البكسل ذات التشتت الخلفي القوي والمنخفض على التوالي على أنّها "غابة" و "منطقة غير حرجية". يُعرّف مصطلح "غابة" هنا على أنّه الغابة الطبيعية التي تزيد مساحتها عن 0.5 هكتار وتتجاوز فيها نسبة الغطاء الحرجي %10. يتطابق هذا التعريف مع تعريف منظمة الأغذية والزراعة (الفاو). بما أنّ التشتّت الخلفي للرادار من الغابة يعتمد على المنطقة (المنطقة المناخية)، يتم تصنيف الغابة/غير الغابة باستخدام حدّ للتشتّت الخلفي يعتمد على المنطقة. يتم التحقّق من دقة التصنيف باستخدام صور في الموقع وصور عالية الدقة ملتقطة من الأقمار الصناعية.
قد تختلف قيم الانتثار الخلفي بشكل كبير من مسار إلى آخر
في مناطق الغابات الواقعة على خطوط العرض العليا. ويعود ذلك إلى التغيّر في شدة التشتت الخلفي الناتج عن تجمد الأشجار في الشتاء.
يُرجى العِلم أنّ ذلك قد يؤثّر في تصنيف المناطق إلى غابات أو غير غابات.
