Peta hutan/non-hutan (FNF) global dibuat dengan mengklasifikasikan gambar SAR (koefisien hamburan balik) dalam mosaik SAR PALSAR-2/PALSAR resolusi 25 m global sehingga piksel hamburan balik yang kuat dan rendah ditetapkan sebagai "hutan" dan "non-hutan". Di sini, "hutan" didefinisikan sebagai hutan alami dengan area yang lebih besar dari 0,5 ha dan tutupan hutan lebih dari 10%. Definisi ini sama dengan definisi Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Karena hamburan balik radar dari hutan bergantung pada wilayah (zona iklim), klasifikasi Hutan/Non-Hutan dilakukan dengan menggunakan nilai minimum hamburan balik yang bergantung pada wilayah. Akurasi klasifikasi diperiksa menggunakan foto in-situ dan gambar satelit optik beresolusi tinggi.
Nilai hamburan balik dapat sangat bervariasi dari jalur ke jalur di area hutan lintang tinggi. Hal ini disebabkan oleh perubahan intensitas hamburan balik yang disebabkan oleh pohon yang membeku di musim dingin.
Perlu diketahui bahwa hal ini dapat memengaruhi klasifikasi hutan/non-hutan.
