Questo modello digitale di elevazione (DEM) è costruito a partire da una combinazione
di DEM ASTER e SPOT-5 per la periferia e il margine della calotta glaciale
(ovvero al di sotto dell'elevazione della linea di equilibrio) a sud di
circa 82,5° N e fotoclinometria AVHRR all'interno della calotta glaciale
e nell'estremo nord (Scambos e Haran, 2002).
I DEM di SPOT-5 sono stati prodotti e distribuiti nell'ambito del progetto Spot5
stereoscopic survey of Polar Ice: Reference Images & Topographies
(SPIRIT) (Korona et al., 2009). Le superfici oceaniche sono state mascherate
utilizzando la maschera di classificazione del terreno GIMP e sostituite con
l'altezza media della superficie del mare CNES CLS11 (Schaeffer et al., 2012).
Nota
Tutti i dati sull'elevazione del terreno sono registrati orizzontalmente e verticalmente
in base alle elevazioni medie di ICESat per il periodo 2003-2009 e
pertanto il DEM ha una data nominale del 2007, anche se è necessario
prestare attenzione quando lo si utilizza in aree di rapido cambiamento, come
i principali ghiacciai di sbocco a sud di 70°0' N.
Il DEM ha una risoluzione di 30 m, anche se la risoluzione "reale" del
DEM varia da 40 m nelle aree di copertura SPOT-5
(vedi Korona et al. 2009) a 500 m nelle aree di fotoclinometria.
L'errore quadratico medio di convalida dell'intera calotta glaciale
rispetto a ICESat è di +/- 10 m, con valori che vanno da circa +/- 1 m
sulla maggior parte delle superfici ghiacciate a +/- 30 m nelle aree con rilievo elevato.
