تم اقتباس تعريفَي "طبيعي" و"غير طبيعي" من تعريف مبادرة "إطار المساءلة" للنظام البيئي الطبيعي على أنّه "نظام بيئي يشبه إلى حد كبير، من حيث تركيبة الأنواع والبنية والوظيفة البيئية، ما يمكن العثور عليه في منطقة معيّنة في حال عدم وجود تأثيرات بشرية كبيرة"، ويمكن أن يشمل أنظمة بيئية مُدارة بالإضافة إلى أنظمة بيئية متدهورة يُتوقّع أن تتجدّد إما بشكل طبيعي أو من خلال الإدارة (AFi 2024). تطبّق "خريطة الأراضي الطبيعية" الخاصة بمبادرة SBTN هذا التعريف من خلال استخدام بدائل استنادًا إلى البيانات المتاحة التي تتوافق مع إرشادات AFi إلى أقصى حد ممكن.
