Khu vực lập bảng mã bưu chính (ZCTA) là khu vực đại diện gần đúng cho mã bưu chính 5 chữ số của Dịch vụ Bưu chính Hoa Kỳ (USPS).
Cục Thống kê dân số xác định ZCTA bằng cách phân bổ mỗi khối Thống kê dân số có chứa địa chỉ cho một khu vực lập bảng mã bưu chính duy nhất, thường là cho ZCTA phản ánh mã bưu chính xuất hiện thường xuyên nhất cho các địa chỉ trong khối đó. Những khối không chứa địa chỉ nhưng được bao quanh hoàn toàn bởi một vùng lập bảng mã bưu chính (vùng đất biệt lập) sẽ được chỉ định cho ZCTA xung quanh; những khối được bao quanh bởi nhiều ZCTA sẽ được thêm vào một ZCTA duy nhất dựa trên đường biên giới chung dài nhất.
Cục Thống kê dân số xác định các khu vực lập bảng mã bưu chính gồm 5 chữ số bằng cách sử dụng mã số gồm 5 ký tự đại diện cho mã bưu chính USPS xuất hiện thường xuyên nhất trong ZCTA đó. Mã này có thể chứa số 0 ở đầu.
Người dùng dữ liệu không nên sử dụng ZCTA để xác định mã bưu chính chính thức của USPS cho việc gửi thư. USPS định kỳ thay đổi mã bưu chính để hỗ trợ việc giao thư hiệu quả hơn. Mã bưu chính chủ yếu bao gồm địa chỉ không phải là địa chỉ nhà ở hoặc địa chỉ hộp thư có thể không có ZCTA tương ứng vì quy trình phân định chủ yếu sử dụng địa chỉ nhà ở, dẫn đến việc thiên về mã bưu chính được dùng cho dịch vụ giao thư theo kiểu thành phố.
