Der Breathing Earth System Simulator (BESS) ist ein vereinfachtes prozessbasiertes Modell, das die Strahlungsübertragung zwischen Atmosphäre und Baumkronen, die Photosynthese der Baumkronen, die Transpiration und die Energiebilanz koppelt. Dabei werden ein atmosphärisches Strahlungsübertragungsmodell und ein künstliches neuronales Netzwerk mit Forcings aus MODIS-Atmosphärenprodukten kombiniert, um tägliche Produkte mit einer Auflösung von 5 km zu generieren.
