See the [asset requirements guide](/google-ads/api/performance-max/asset-requirements).\n\nTo understand how assets are used for Performance Max, see\n[assets](/google-ads/api/performance-max/assets) and\n[asset requirements](/google-ads/api/performance-max/asset-requirements).\n\nBidding\n-------\n\nPerformance Max uses [Smart bidding](//support.google.com/google-ads/answer/7065882).\nThese bid strategies use Google AI to optimise for conversions or conversion\nvalue in each and every auction --- a feature known as\n\"auction-time bidding\".\nThese include the following:\n\n- Maximize conversions (with an optional target CPA)\n- Maximize conversion value (with an optional target ROAS)\n\nWhen upgrading from an existing campaign, it is worth considering which of these\nbest suits your business needs. It is also worth evaluating your\n[goals](/google-ads/api/docs/conversions/goals/overview)\nto make sure the bidding strategy you choose can optimize towards that goal.\n\nFor more information on how these can be applied to Performance Max, see our\nguides on [conversion goals](/google-ads/api/performance-max/conversion-goals) and\n[campaign creation](/google-ads/api/performance-max/create-campaign).\n\nTargeting\n---------\n\nPerformance Max automatically optimises targeting to improve performance in the\never-changing advertising landscape. Although restrictive targeting which you\nmight be using in your existing campaigns is not supported in Performance Max\ncampaigns, you can provide signals that help Google AI optimise for your\nselected goals. Here are examples of signals:\n\n### Audience signals\n\n[Audience signals](//support.google.com/google-ads/answer/14753570) let you\nshare demographics, interests, and behaviors of\nyour customers to help Google AI find the most relevant audience. In Performance\nMax they can be applied to an asset group to let you specify which\n[audience](/google-ads/api/docs/remarketing/overview#audiences) is most likely to convert for\nyour asset group.\n| **Note:** Performance Max campaigns can show ads to relevant audiences outside of the signals that you provide, based on what Google AI thinks will best meet your performance goals.\n\nSee our guide on integrating [audience signals](/google-ads/api/performance-max/asset-group-signals#audiences) using the Google Ads API.\n\n### Search themes\n\n[Search themes](//support.google.com/google-ads/answer/13351809) in Performance\nMax let you provide Google AI with\ninformation about what your customers are searching for and which topics lead\nto conversions for your business.\n\nHere are a few examples where search themes can be helpful if you\nhave knowledge about your business or customers that AI can't easily or quickly\nlearn:\n\n- Your landing page doesn't have complete details or the latest updates about the products and services you offer.\n- You've just expanded into a new market or launched a new product or service where your campaigns don't have extensive performance history.\n- You are launching a new promotion or sale for the holiday season where you don't have extensive performance history.\n- You want to expand your reach within Performance Max, including on Search inventory in Performance Max, and ensure you have comprehensive coverage on important business themes.\n- You want to provide important information to help your campaign ramp up and optimize performance faster.\n\n| **Note:** You can add up to 25 search themes per asset group. They should be unique, so avoid providing similar themes such as 'car' and 'automobile' since these reach the same audience. For more information about using Search themes and the policies associated with them, see this [help center guide](//support.google.com/google-ads/answer/13351809).\n\nYou can find which new search terms you're reaching based on the themes you've\nadded by looking at the\n[search term insights](//support.google.com/google-ads/answer/11386930)\nreport at a\n[campaign](/google-ads/api/fields/v21/campaign_search_term_insight) or\n[customer](/google-ads/api/fields/v21/customer_search_term_insight) level.\n\nSee our guide on integrating\n[search themes](/google-ads/api/performance-max/asset-group-signals#search_themes) using the Google Ads API."]]
